Renato Mello

The second tournament on the 2017 Bar Poker Open schedule took nearly eight hours to complete. The $120+$20 Deepstack No Limit Hold’em event drew 138 entrants to easily surpass the $10,000 guaranteed prize pool.

While the Monster Stack event was playing out on the main stage, the Deep Stack event reached the final table in the back of the Signature Room. The Event 2 field had consisted of many players who had originally busted the Monster Stack event and this was a sort of second chance for them. Many players are in town for the $100,000 National Championship starting tomorrow and this was good “practice” as they say.

After Reginald Jones busted in 11th place the final table was created. It didn’t take long to get down to the eventual final seven. Jennifer Yuka was the first elimination from the final table followed shortly by Morteza Khaki. It was after Khaki’s elimination that the players started “talking chop”.

It was getting late, nearly 3:00 a,m. and almost everyone wanted to call it a night. Most players were happy to split the remaining prize pool, all but one. Yee “The Professional” Cheung, explained that it wasn’t enough money for him to chop and he wanted to play it out.

As the poker gods would have it, Cheung was the next person eliminated, at the hands of Renato Mello. After Cheung busted the table immediately agreed to an even seven-way adjusted payout deal with all victors receiving $2,008. The two chip leaders flipped a coin and it was Renato Mello on the good side of fate.

The trophy winner, Mello hails all the way from San Paulo Brazil, where he says poker is thriving. He came up to New York for a vacation and decided to drive down for Borgata’s Fall Poker Open. He cashed in the Almighty Stack Event 9 for $1,107 and decided to try his luck again by taking the trip down to play today’s events. He busted Event 1 and hopped right into Event 2.

Lady luck was on his side this time. As she was for the rest of the remaining final tablists who all seemed thrilled with their result.
